When is the time for Memory Care? Throughout ActivCare’s history of caring for those with memory loss, we have heard over and over that families often choose to delay the placement of a loved one in memory care. Many wait until their loved one no longer recognizes them or until their loved one requires physical assistance. This common hesitation underscores the importance of understanding the right time for memory care to ensure loved ones receive the support they need when they need it.
Sound familiar?
We understand the natural desire to keep your loved one with memory loss physically near you. Placing a loved one outside the home is a personal decision and one fraught with many emotions—guilt, sadness, stress—and is rarely entered into lightly. Major factors affecting the decision include the safety of the person with dementia, the impact on caregiver health, and the inability to meet the care needs of your loved one. Families often hang on until something breaks down (e.g., a major fall or wandering), thus triggering the need to move to a memory care community.
When to Move to Memory Care? We would like to offer you a different perspective.
Give your loved one the opportunity to develop a new routine, sooner rather than later. Each day, residents in our community are given purpose and kept active to help provide a sense of accomplishment and have a little fun. Their days are scheduled with routines that provide familiarity to carry them forward.
The ActivCare program is based on the adult day care model of engaging residents in hands-on activity, exercising physical, cognitive, social, and creative skills. Using those critical skills and abilities daily helps delay the loss of these skills. Simply put, with these skills, it is truly “use it or lose it.”
The activities are structured for easy comprehension yet varied with the purpose of exercising all senses. Our safe and secure setting plus, our team of specially trained caregivers, provide the appropriate environment for those with memory loss.
When your loved one can actively participate in the program, they can benefit the most from it, helping to maintain their identities. Additionally, friendships develop along the way, further enhancing their lives. When family members visit, residents have the joy and pride of sharing their experiences. When daily care is provided by the community, families can return to their roles as husbands, wives, children, and grandchildren.
Residents that have lived in our communities for years feel that they have their lives separate from their family. Visits are essential, but residents no longer feel that they are a burden and dependent on loved ones.
As the disease progresses, residents have the comfort of being cared for in a familiar environment—less stressful than being moved following a traumatic event. With round-the-clock staff and licensed nurse support on-site 7 days a week, compassionate care can be provided by familiar staff all through to the end stages.
When considering the right time for memory care, consider the benefits of moving sooner rather than later. The quality of your loved one’s daily life can benefit from the engagement and interaction ActivCare provides.
