With great sorrow and sadness we announce the passing of
W. Major Chance, Founder and Executive Chairman of ActivCare Living.
He led the charge to change state law to improve the care of those with memory loss in a less clinical environment.
In 1995, Major was instrumental in the passage of SB 732, the legislation that allowed for secured perimeters in assisted living communities in California. This model has since been adopted by many other states throughout the nation.
Major will always be the vision and soul of our company. His drive and ambition to provide a better quality of life for those living with dementia is the foundation of ActivCare Living and the sole focus that drives each of our communities and our company.
ActivCare team members are a part of Major’s legacy, and will carry out his vision each and every day in his honor.
We continue to live by the philosophy that Major instilled in us:
“Take care of the residents, take care of their family members and take care of the staff members—And all of the rest will take care of itself.”
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a contribution be made to the W. Major Chance Visionary Fund through Alzheimer’s San Diego at www.alzsd.org/majorchance.

My family and I are exceedingly grateful to the proficient and compassionate staff of ActivCare for taking loving care of our dad and husband for eight years. No matter what time of day or night we would visit, the ever vigilant and caring staff were guiding, comforting, assisting, dancing, bowling, laughing or singing with Dad. The staff also helped our family to understand and accept Dad's ever-changing world and encouraged us to savor new kinds of joy and adventure with him.” —Daughter of ActivCare Resident
